Water heater maintenance · Las Vegas Valley

Why flushing your water heater actually matters.

Most homeowners never see what is sitting at the bottom of their water heater. In hard-water areas like Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, sediment and minerals can build up inside the tank. This video shows why regular water heater flushing is not just a small maintenance item — it can make a real difference.

See it for yourself

This is what can come out of an unflushed water heater.

The water may look fine at the faucet, but inside the tank, minerals, rust, and dirty water can settle at the bottom. A proper flush helps remove that buildup before it keeps getting worse.

The short version

A water heater can collect a lot more than clean water.

A tank water heater holds hot water every day. Over time, minerals from hard water, rust particles, and sediment can settle at the bottom of the tank. When the heater fires up, it has to heat through that layer of buildup. That can make the system work harder and can also lead to noise, poor hot water performance, and faster wear on the tank.

Why water heaters build up sediment

Las Vegas water is known for being hard, which means it carries minerals like calcium and magnesium. When water is heated inside a tank, those minerals can separate and settle at the bottom. The longer the tank goes without maintenance, the more that sediment can collect.

This is why some older tanks make popping, rumbling, or knocking sounds. The burner is heating the tank, but sediment is sitting between the burner and the water. That trapped layer can create noise and make the water heater less efficient over time.

Signs your water heater may need to be flushed

  • Popping or rumbling noises: This can happen when sediment hardens at the bottom of the tank.
  • Rust-colored or dirty hot water: Discolored water can be a warning sign that something is happening inside the tank or plumbing system.
  • Hot water does not last as long: Sediment can reduce the usable space inside the tank and affect performance.
  • The tank has not been maintained in years: If no one remembers the last flush, it is probably time to inspect it.
  • The water heater is older: Older tanks need to be checked carefully before flushing because heavy buildup or corrosion can increase risk.

How often should a water heater be flushed?

For many homes in North Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Valley, once a year is a good maintenance schedule for a tank water heater. Homes with very hard water, heavy hot water use, or older equipment may need closer attention. Tankless water heaters are different — they usually need a descaling service instead of a tank flush.

At Sentinel Plumbing, we offer tank water heater flushing and tankless descaling. Our Sentinel Shield Membership also includes yearly water heater maintenance, which helps homeowners stay on schedule instead of waiting until the heater starts making noise or losing performance.

When flushing may not be enough

Flushing is maintenance, not magic. If a tank is already leaking, badly corroded, over 10 years old, or full of heavy hardened sediment, flushing may not solve the issue. In some cases, disturbing an older tank can reveal problems that were already there.

That is why we look at the age, condition, water quality, shutoff valves, signs of corrosion, and overall setup before recommending the best option. Sometimes the right answer is a flush. Sometimes it is an anode rod replacement, repair, or full water heater replacement.

Frequently asked

Water heater flushing questions, answered.

How often should a water heater be flushed in Las Vegas?

For many homes in the Las Vegas Valley, once a year is a good schedule because hard water minerals can settle at the bottom of the tank. The exact schedule depends on the age, condition, and water quality of the system.

What happens if a water heater is never flushed?

Sediment, minerals, rust, and dirty water can collect inside the tank. Over time, that buildup can reduce hot water performance, make the heater work harder, create popping or rumbling sounds, and shorten the life of the water heater.

Can flushing fix every water heater problem?

No. Flushing is maintenance, not a guaranteed repair. If a tank is already leaking, severely corroded, very old, or has failing parts, replacement or repair may be the safer option.

Do tankless water heaters need flushing too?

Tankless water heaters usually need a descale service instead of a tank flush. Descaling helps remove mineral buildup inside the heat exchanger so the unit can keep running properly.
