Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Wax ring
- Toilet bolts
- Level
- Tape measure
- Bucket and sponge
- New toilet
Step 1: Remove the Old Toilet
- Turn Off the Water Supply: Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow.
- Drain the Toilet: Flush the toilet to remove as much water as possible. Use a sponge and bucket to soak up any remaining water in the tank and bowl.
- Disconnect the Water Supply Line: Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water supply line from the tank.
- Remove the Old Toilet: Unscrew the nuts from the toilet bolts at the base. Carefully lift the toilet and set it aside. You may need help, as toilets can be heavy.
Step 2: Prepare the Area
- Remove the Old Wax Ring: Scrape off the old wax ring from the flange using a putty knife. Be sure to clean the area thoroughly.
- Inspect the Flange: Check the flange for any damage. If it's cracked or broken, replace it before proceeding.
Step 3: Install the New Toilet
- Position the Wax Ring: Place a new wax ring on the flange. Ensure it's centered and secure.
- Set the Toilet Bowl: Carefully lower the new toilet bowl onto the flange, aligning the holes with the bolts. Press down firmly to seal the wax ring.
- Secure the Toilet: Tighten the nuts onto the bolts, alternating sides to keep the pressure even. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can crack the porcelain.
- Check for Level: Use a level to ensure the toilet is even. Adjust as necessary.
Step 4: Attach the Tank
- Position the Tank: Place the tank on the bowl, aligning the bolts with the holes.
- Secure the Tank: Tighten the nuts onto the bolts, ensuring the tank is snug against the bowl. Again, avoid overtightening.
- Reconnect the Water Supply: Attach the water supply line to the tank and turn on the shut-off valve.
Step 5: Test the Installation
- Check for Leaks: Flush the toilet and inspect for any leaks around the base or connections.
- Adjust as Needed: If you notice any leaks, tighten connections or adjust the wax ring as necessary.
